Fruits & Vegetables

Pomegranate

Punica granatum

The fruit is a leathery shell around several hundred seeds, each in its own sac of juice. The word grenade comes from it, by way of the shape.

Benefits

Brings blood pressure down

The top number falls, and it falls further on a modest glass than a large one.

What It Is Known For

Pomegranate for the heart in general

Blood pressure is the measure that moved. Broader claims about hearts do not follow from it.

Drinking more of it working better

It did not. The smaller daily amount did more than the larger one, which is the opposite of what people assume.

Pomegranate as a lasting fix

The effect showed up inside two months and was lost after them. Whatever this does, it does not do it forever.

Key Active Compounds

The juice

Pressed from the whole fruit, arils and all.

The arils

The seed sacs, which are the edible part.

How to Take It / Use It

For blood pressure

Drink a glass a day, around three hundred millilitres, and judge it inside two months.

Cautions

Blood pressure medicines

Pomegranate pulls the same way, and two things pulling together can take it lower than intended.

Warfarin

One case has been recorded of pomegranate juice unsettling it, which is not a pattern but is worth knowing before a glass a day becomes a habit.

It is a sugary drink

A glass of juice carries the sugar of several fruits without the bulk that would have slowed you down.

Where It Comes From

Punica granatum comes from Iran and northern India and spread across the Mediterranean early enough to turn up in Egyptian tombs and Greek myth. It fruits on dry ground where little else will.

How We Choose It

We check every product so you don't have to. A pomegranate only makes our list if:

  • One hundred percent juice, and it says so. Anything sold as a juice drink or a cocktail is mostly something else.
  • Not from concentrate, if you can. Concentrate is juice with the water boiled off and put back, and it is a further step from the fruit.
  • No added sugar. The juice is sweet enough without help, and added sugar is the thing this page would rather you avoided.
  • Not an extract or an ellagic acid capsule. Those are concentrated, and the juice is what was measured.

If no product meets these standards, we don't list one. No exceptions for affiliates.
