Seeds & Nuts
Psyllium
Plantago ovata
The part used is not the seed but the husk around it, which swells to many times its size in water. A spoonful left in a glass turns the whole glass to jelly within minutes.
Benefits
The harmful kind comes down, and the total figure with it.
It is the fiber with the best record for getting a stuck gut going again.
What It Is Known For
It is fiber that holds water, and the gut it leaves behind is the gut you had.
It fills you up while you drink it, and nothing found tests what happens to weight.
Taken without enough liquid it swells and can block the throat, and that is the one thing to get right.
Key Active Compounds
The gel-forming fiber that makes up most of the husk.
The part used. The seed inside it is a different thing.
How to Take It / Use It
Stir a rounded teaspoon into a full glass of water, drink it straight away before it thickens, and follow it with a second glass.
Drink the same glass once a day, and keep drinking water through the day. Start small and build up.
Cautions
Never take psyllium dry — it swells, and without a full glass of liquid it can block the throat or the food pipe.
Anyone who has difficulty swallowing should not take it at all.
Chest pain, vomiting or trouble swallowing or breathing after taking it needs urgent attention.
It slows what the gut absorbs, so keep it a couple of hours away from other medicine.
Where It Comes From
Plantago ovata is grown mostly in the dry fields of northern India and Pakistan, where it has been a field crop for centuries. Almost all of the world's husk comes from there.
How We Choose It
We check every product so you don't have to. A psyllium only makes our list if:
- Whole husk rather than a blend. One ingredient, and nothing sweetened or flavored.
- No sugar, no sweetener, no color. The flavored tubs are mostly the other things.
- Powder or whole husk, not granules. Granules are the form that was taken off the market for choking.
- No capsules if you can help it. A capsule holds a fraction of a spoonful, so it takes a handful to reach what was measured.
If no product meets these standards, we don't list one. No exceptions for affiliates.
